Is HydraFacial Good for Acne and Can It Help Acne Scars?
Written by Umair Hussain · Medically reviewed by Dr. Rizwana Hanif, Consultant Dermatologist and Founder (MBBS, MCPS Dermatology) · Updated October 2026
Quick answer Yes, HydraFacial may help mild acne, oily skin, blackheads and clogged pores by cleansing, gently exfoliating and hydrating your skin. However, it cannot cure acne or remove deep acne scars. If you have painful breakouts, inflamed pimples or pitted scars, you may need a different treatment after a dermatologist assesses your skin.
Everyone wants to know is hydrafacial good for acne before spending money on another facial. You may have tried face washes, serums or home remedies without seeing much improvement. HydraFacial can help certain acne-prone skin types, but it matters whether you have active pimples, blocked pores, dark marks or actual scars.
Here is what you should know before booking a session.
1. How does HydraFacial work on acne-prone skin?
HydraFacial combines several skincare steps in one device-assisted treatment.
These usually include:
Cleansing to remove surface impurities
Gentle exfoliation to lift dead skin cells
Controlled suction to clear suitable clogged pores
Hydration using targeted skincare solutions
The treatment can make congested skin feel cleaner and smoother.
However, it does not address every underlying cause of acne, including hormonal influences and persistent inflammation.
2. Can HydraFacial help active acne?
It may help some people with mild acne, especially when clogged pores, excess sebum and blackheads are their main concerns.
A small clinical study involving 20 adults with mild-to-moderate acne reported improvement after a series of six HydraFacial Clarifying treatments.
However, the study was small and did not include a control group. More research is needed.
HydraFacial should not replace prescribed acne medication when medical treatment is necessary.
If you have painful cysts, nodules or severely inflamed pimples, see a dermatologist before booking a facial.
3. Does HydraFacial remove acne scars?
No. HydraFacial cannot remove deep or pitted acne scars.
It may temporarily improve surface texture and hydration, making your skin appear smoother, but it does not rebuild the deeper tissue damaged by acne scarring.
It helps to understand the difference between acne marks and scars.
Post-acne marks
These are flat red, brown or darker patches left after a breakout. They are changes in skin colour rather than true scars.
Atrophic acne scars
These appear as depressions in the skin and include:
Ice-pick scars
Boxcar scars
Rolling scars
These scars usually require treatments that target deeper skin structures.
At Skinology, we assess your scar type before discussing suitable acne and acne scar treatment options.
4. Is HydraFacial better for acne or acne scars?
HydraFacial is generally more relevant to mild congestion and surface skincare than established acne scarring.
| Skin concern | Can HydraFacial help? |
|---|---|
| Blackheads | May help clear suitable clogged pores |
| Oily skin | May temporarily reduce surface congestion |
| Mild acne | May support an acne care plan |
| Active cystic acne | Not a suitable standalone treatment |
| Dark acne marks | Limited benefit |
| Deep acne scars | Cannot remove them |
| Dehydrated skin | Can improve hydration |
If you have both active acne and scars, controlling new breakouts is usually the first priority.
5. What treatment works better for deep acne scars?
Your treatment depends on the scar type, depth, skin tone and whether you still have active acne.
A dermatologist may consider:
Microneedling
Creates controlled micro-injuries to stimulate collagen production and gradually improve selected depressed scars.
Fractional CO2 laser
Targets skin resurfacing and collagen remodelling. It requires careful assessment, particularly for skin prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Subcision
Helps release fibrous bands pulling certain rolling scars beneath the skin.
Chemical peels
May improve selected superficial pigmentation and texture concerns but cannot remove every type of scar.
These procedures have different risks, recovery periods and suitability criteria.
Do not choose a scar treatment based on before-and-after photos alone.
6. Who should avoid HydraFacial during an acne breakout?
You should postpone treatment or seek medical advice if you have:
Painful or severely inflamed acne
Open wounds or broken skin
An active skin infection
Significant irritation or sunburn
A known allergy to treatment ingredients
A recent procedure that has not fully healed
Tell your clinician about any prescription acne medication, including isotretinoin, retinoids or exfoliating products.
Your skin may need time to recover before another procedure.
7. How often should you get HydraFacial for acne?
There is no fixed schedule that suits everyone.
Some people choose sessions every four to six weeks, depending on their skin condition, goals and tolerance.
You do not necessarily need monthly facials to maintain healthy skin.
If acne keeps returning, ask your dermatologist whether you need a medical acne management plan instead of repeated cleansing sessions.
What should you do after an acne HydraFacial?
Keep your routine simple while your skin settles.
For the first 24 to 48 hours:
Use a gentle cleanser
Apply a suitable moisturiser
Wear broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher during the day
Avoid picking or squeezing pimples
Avoid harsh scrubs and unnecessary exfoliation
Follow your clinician’s advice about restarting active skincare ingredients
Mild redness or temporary sensitivity may occur.
Contact your clinic if you develop significant swelling, blistering, worsening pain or a persistent reaction.
